Chaplaincy & The Law

The next Chaplaincy & the Law course, through the South Carolina Fire Academy, will be offered online May 11th, 8 am-noon. This advanced course is for public safety chaplains who want to understand the legal framework in which they operate in the United States and especially in South Carolina.

We will cover:

  • The historical foundations for governmental chaplaincy

  • The separation of church and state vs. the 1st Amendment

  • Case Laws:

Lemon v. Kurtzman

Chambers v. Marsh

American Legion v. American Humanist Assoc.

Malyon v. Pierce County

Voswinkel v. City of Charlotte

  • Priest/Penitent

  • Mandatory Reporting (Vulnerable adults & children)

  • Laws that did and didn't pass in South Carolina

Registration is $25. Limited seating. Prereq: Essentials of Fire Chaplaincy or ICPC 12 Basic Courses.  Register through the SCFA. Cost is higher for out-of-state students.  Please call (803)896-9865 for more information.
