Spring Training Seminar - April 24, 2018 (North Charleston)

With the theme of "Chaplaincy & Peer Support Models of Care," attendees heard from three presenters. Chaplain Dr Eric Skidmore spoke about the SC Law Enforcement Assistance Program. Patti Graham gave us a briefing on the SC Fire Assistance Support Team, and Gerald MIshoe told us about the Low Country Firefighter Support Team.

After lunch, Gerald took us to the Charleston Nine Memorial, where he talked about each of the nine Charleston Firefighters who lost their lives in the tragic June 18, 2007 Charleston Sofa Super Store fire.

Fall Training Seminar - December 5, 2016 (SC State Fire Academy)

The SC Fire Academy served as host for SCPSCA's Fall Training Seminar, December 5, 2017.  It was a great opportunity for over 100 serving in all facets of public safety to come together for vital training on Trauma, PTSD/I and Moral Injury. We enjoyed great hands-on training, a great meal and much needed fellowship. Completion certificates were given for 5 continuing education contact hours for those who attended the entire meeting.

Dr. Michael Langston, conducted the training.  Having been deployed a number of times as a former U.S. Marine Corps’ Platoon Leader, and U.S. Navy Chaplain, he spent ten months in the Persian Gulf combat zone during Desert Shield/Desert Storm, ten months as the Combined Forces Chaplain in Kabul, Afghanistan; and fourteen months as II Marine Expeditionary Core Chaplain at Camp Fallujah, Iraq.  His last active duty service was as Commanding Officer for the Naval Chaplaincy School near Brevard, NC where he also served as a law enforcement chaplain.  He now serves as Director of Chaplaincy for the CIU- Columbia International University Seminary and is completing his Doctor of Philosphpy (PhD) degree at the University of Aberdeen with a focus in chaplaincy.

When Dr. Langston retired from military service in 2011, with thirty-six years of military service, he was diagnosed with moderate to severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).   He taught the SC Public Safety Chaplains Association attendees from his earned experience.

Using his expertise as a counselor and his personal experience suffering with PTSD/moral injury, he and his wife Kathy, a professor of communications at the University of SC,   have written two books about their family’s journey through this struggle with PTSD/moral injury.

They share their own experiences as well as theological insights to show their family’s journey to embrace the difficulties presented by returning and active warriors serving in all areas of public safety: military service, law enforcement, fire service, ems and call centers. Their devotional book is a blessing to anyone who has suffered trauma.  You can find Dr. Langston's books, "A Journey To Hope: Healing the Traumatized Spirit" and "From Despair to Hope- A 40 Day Devotional"  on Amazon.com in paperback or Kindle versions.
